| fat deposits Mar 25, 2009 My spouse's torso is collecting fat depositis. We are told this is due to a side effect of epivir. If he switches drugs will the fat deposits go away? |

Response from Dr. Henry
Epivir (lamuvudine/3TC) has been associated with increased fat deposits but the link is fairly weak. Many other factors can contribute to fat distribution issues (such as genetics, diet, exercise, duration of HIV infection, CD4 count nadir). Switching off Epivir will have a variably/unpredictable effect on fat deposits and often there is not much evidence that an alternative drug will have less of an effect. The topic of fat distribution problems seen in the context of HIV infection and its treatment remains a challenging problem. Often other drugs in the regimen used with the epivir can influence fat distribution so an analysis of the entire regimen is often needed to determine if a change in meds (depending on what meds have been used in the past and which meds are available where you are located) would be a consideration.
