lastest hiv treatment gene therapies Mar 1, 2009 Hi Dr Keith, you are our shining light please keep up the great work you do for people with hiv, Dr Can you please explain to me the difference between HIV drug and gene therapies? Which is more effective for those living with HIV? And are they both available in the U.S.??? or when would gene therapies be availible ??? thank you so much for your time. |

 Gene therapy for HIV is not available anywhere outside the clinical research setting (very small # of patients enrolled in the studies to date compared to millions on antiretroviral therapy). It is too early to tell whether various gene therapy approaches will have wide applicability. Gene therapy is also likely to be very expensive. Current HIV therapy is highly effective in most patients with cost as low as a dollar a day when generics are used so it would be a challenge (though possible) for a novel therapy to become widely available.
