| HIV and cardiac risks Feb 18, 2009 I have never smoked and do not have a weight problem. The tread mill and home gym gets used everyday for at least 30 minutes. My cholesterol count was 188. Do I need to be monitored for cardiac problems from HIV? Age is 51, Hiv since 1986 and on HAART since 1988 . Current Cd4 is 504 and Viral Load is 100. Changing meds due to mutations but no side effects so far. Thanks DWD |

Response from Dr. Henry
Cardiac risk (10 year prediction) is often assessed with the Framingham equation which includes blood presssure readings, levels of LDL/HDL cholesterol, triglycerides, family history et cetera. HIV infection (particularly untreated) may increase the risk for heart disease. If your risk is determined to be increased from that assessment then intervention may be recommended (life style, drugs, switch meds et cetera) depending on further details. Most HIV providers are experienced with that assessment. KH | |||||||||
