breast
Jan 21, 2009

Hi I'm a male who's been on meds for 2years now (combivir+efavirenz) and my right-hand side breast has grown. What could be the problem?

Response from Dr. Henry

Unilateral gycnecomastia is seen in the general population but may be more common in HIV+ persons. There have been some reports loosely and not convincingly linking it to HIV regimens such as yours. evaluation of the type of tissue involved (exam, X-ray, ultrasound) is often recommended. A variety of other medications (including marijuana)and endocrine conditions can contribute. The course is variable and often the condition resolves over time. Cancer has to be considered in the evaluation. If no other possible cause is found then consideration of a switch to an alternative HIV regimen is worth discussing with your HIV specialist with options depending on treatment history and drug availability. Sometimes cosmetic surgery is offered for cosmetic/symptoms management. KH
