Response from Dr. Henry
Truumune contains D4T, 3TC and nevirapine. The D4T is most directly responsible for fat loss in some patients. Diet can only help modestly in most cases. A switch to an alternative HIV regimen (if available) is often helpful to decrease/reverse fat loss. Switch the D4T to tenofovir or abacavir is often done in the US in that situation but unfortunately those drugs have limited availability in many regions of the world. There is no easy intervention/drug that can reverse fat loss in the setting of treated HIV infection though that problem is getting lots of research attention. Age, race, time with HIV, genetics, lower CD4 counts and other non-drug factors can contribute to the problem of fat loss. KH | ||||||||||
