Fat loss supplements and hiv meds
Dec 26, 2008

I am currently undetectable and considering taking a fat loss supplement and i'm concerned about drug interaction. Im on Reyataz (boosted by norvir) and im on a clinical trial so the other med is either abacavir/lamivudine or emtricitabine/tenovir. I have a bottle of VPX meltdown but noticed it has Yohimbine in it. Is this dangerous with the protien inhibitors im taking? I was also looking at Lipovox which appears to be safer or Fenphedra which is somewhat controversial. My hiv specialist has said my belly fat is food fat and not hiv fat. I could use a boost to drop some weight in addition to working out and eating better. Any help would be great. Thanks

Response from Dr. Henry

No dietary supplement or diet has been shown to be both safe and effective to reduce significant amounts of abdominal fat in the setting of treated HIV infection. Most haven't been properly evaluated in clinical trials and none are FDA approved so it is difficult to endorse any one product (see www.quackwatch.org for general info on health claims of products). Managment of excess abdominal fat is a challenge in the general population as well as in HIV+ persons. There may be a strong genetic component (how do similarly or older aged relatives look in that department). KH
