Dec 12, 2008

Hi,would it be possible to list some of the vitamins/minerals/supplements to stay away from when on HIV meds.Always like to keeps my body healthy and just wondering what is not good from the health food shop.Thanks.

Response from Dr. Henry

Some alternative meds can interfere with HIV meds (such as protease inhibitors) and those include St Johns wort, garlic supplements and grapefruit extracts. In many cases there is not good data looking at drug interactions though in general most alternative meds/vitamins can be taken with most HIV meds. Informing your HIV specialist of any use of vitamins/supplements is important to allow for monitoring for any unusual situations. KH
