Apr 21, 2001

Dear Doc,

May I ask and know when does herpes virus would strike on during the HIV infection

when does it occurs in the body? and also in the mouth?

What particular part in the body does it commonly appears aside from the mouth?? (on the head of the penis??)

Hope for your kind answer and reply. Thank you. John

Response from Dr. Henry

Herpess simplex infections can occur throughout the course of HIV infection. There are severaal types of herpes simplex viruses. One of them more frequently infects the genital area (can involve the vagina, cervix, anal and rectal areas as well) while the other form more often involves the oral region (cold sores). Another herpes virus, herpes zoster, infects the nerve root (chicken pox) and then later in life can cause an infection/rash to appeaar along a nerve root. Herpes infections can be more recurrent and more severe in the setting of HIV related immune damage. KH
