Early symptoms after HIV infection
Nov 11, 2008
What kind of symptoms can occur short after a primary infection of HIV? I was recently diagnosed but I feel very well. I'm not on treatment yet and my CD4 count is 600. No viral load result available yet. How long can a person live without treatment?
Response from Dr. Henry
The range of outcomes with HIV infection without treatment is very broad (varies from person to person) anywhere from immediate life threatening problems to survival > 20 years for a small % of patients. In the pre-therapy days the average in the US from infection to AIDS was about 10 years with 1-2 years of survival once AIDS diagnosis. KH
