The future of hiv treatment Oct 13, 2008 Hi Dr Keith, first l would like to thank you for your great work you do with hiv people, l am recently hiv pos and read your every post, my hiv doctor told me there is hope that a future treatment can come out that switches off hiv and turns it into a harmless virus, but the hiv is still in your system...  Current HIV medications are actually very effective at switching off HIV making it relatively harmless (while on treatment). There is no treatment on the near term horizon that can switch off HIV rendering it a harmless virus on no treatment though a range of new treatments are under study they are generally at very early stages of study with much uncertainty about clinical merit/practicality.
