LACTIC ACIDOSIS RX
Jul 11, 2008

PLHA,ON ART ESPECIALLY ON d4T,ddI,SEEMS TO PRODUCE LACTIC ACIDOSIS BECAUSE OF MITOCHONDRIAL TOXICITY , MAY I REQUEST YOU THE LINE OF TREATMENT FOR THE SAME,OTHER THAN STOPPING THE OFFENDING DRUGS

Response from Dr. Henry

If a patient has lactic acidosis in the setting of use of D4T/ddI (ART) there is no treatment that I can recommend that is as important as stopping the offending meds. I have little confidence that any treatment (usually involves fluid and electrolyte support and reversing the acid excess) would be effective/safe if offending drugs were continued. KH
