Diabetes and Meds
Jul 2, 2008

Hi Dr. My fasting glucose has averaged 108 over the last year. I'm not over weight. In fact, I may be a bit under weight. I exercise regularly. I watch what I eat very carefully. I've been taking Epzicom and Sustiva for about 5 years. My CD4 count is around 700+ and my VL is undetectable. I've been + for 12 years. How likely is it that the meds or the disease is causing my elevated glucose? Thank you.

Response from Dr. Henry

There may be a modest contribution to risk for diabetes from your meds that would be outweighed by genetic factors as well as diet/exercise patterns, liver status and other traditional risk factors for diabetes. It would not be easy to change your HIV regimen to another one that would clearly have less of an impact on glucose tolerance/metabolism. KH
