Fiber for diarrhea
May 23, 2008

Dear Dr. H.

I have read that fiber supplements can help with diarrhea associated with PI's but no where have I read at what dose you should use and when you should take it. I bought some citrucel caplets at 500 mg but the bottle says take up to 12 a day. That seems like a lot. Could taking citrucel makes things worse? Thank you.

Response from Dr. Henry

Two to three grams of extra fiber a day (including that found in Citrocel) can help some patients with diarrhea from protease inhibitors. Calcium supplements (such as Oscal D) and/or Immodium also help selected patients. Also-an evalation for other possible causes (such as lactose intolerance, other infections) needs to be considered.
