timing of split dose meds
Mar 8, 2008

Treatment naive, with highly resistant virus, I will soon start a regimen of boosted Lexiva in two doses and truvada

1. How much leeway do I have in timing of the 12 hour boosted PI split? For example can I take the AM dose at 8 AM and the pm dose at 7PM? or must I maintain a strictly 12 hour split. 2. Does norvir have to be taken with food or is it just to decrease gastric side effects? 3. Can any antacids, H2 blockers or proton pump inhibitors, etc. be taken with these meds?

Thanks

Response from Dr. Henry

Since Lexiva can also be dosed once a day (most often as 1400 mg with 100 mg ritonavir/Norvir) as well as the Truvada, there is considerable leeway in the timing of doses if taken twice daily (doses from day to day can vary by 2-4 hours usually without major problems). Norvir with food is recommended mostly to reduce side effects. Lexiva/ritonavir can be taken with any of the acid reducing agents you list usually without concern for reduced effectiveness. KH
