No Side Effects?
Apr 15, 2001

Hello. I am 33 years old, male, HIV +, with a t-cell count of 193, and a viral load of approx. 60,000. I have not yet had an opportunistic infection and have managed to stay healthy, thus far. However, considering my low t-cell count, I decided to start medication and I am now taking Epivir, Videx, and Sustiva. My question, then, is this; are side effects, to whichever degree, always present? I started the medication thinking I would experience them and I have yet to notice any difference. It has only been a few days since I started, so does that mean the worst is to come? Do they get worse after, say, a week? I realize people react differently, but I'm just wondering what the norm is. Any insight is appreciated. Thank you.

Response from Dr. Henry

Well you are off to a good start. For which side effects one can see with your meds, you may want to check the area at the Body which discusses the specific medications. For Sustiva the major side effects related to cenral nervous system problems. They are usually seen early so you may be fortunate and not experience any. For the D drugs, they are often well tolerated so side effects then are long-term such as peripheral neuropathy or pancreatitis. You should be familiar with those problems and on guard for them but most people do well for years. Some patients seem prone to side effects and others don't. Maybe you will be one of the luck ones.
