Meds and the effects
Nov 30, 2007

I was diagnosed with AIDS 11/2005. I started Reyataz and Epzicom 4/2007. Since, I have lost strength in my legs and hands. My speech slurs, I say things that make no sense. My right side hurts continually, hip, leg muscle aches and seems to want to give out. My vision is a concern as well. I have out of control diabetes and my blood pressure was controlled but is now up all the time. My clinic assumes everyone's body is the same with AIDS, I beg to differ. Any suggestions? I honestly feel I am on the down hill with this. Should I try to find a physician or feel safe with a nurse practitioner?

Response from Dr. Conway

The answer to your last question is that you need to feel comfortable with the knowledge base of your provider, as well as your professional relationship with him or her. If you're happy with that, it doesn`t matter whether they are a doctor or whatever else...you're being taken care of...

As for the symptoms you describe, it does not sound as if it relates to the medications you are receiving. I would actually be concerned that they relate primarily to your high blood pressure and diabetes that need careful attention. I would probably emphasize controlling these things first, and seeing if this gets rid of your symptoms. As long as it is working (producing full virologic suppression), I would not consider changing your HIV treatment at all.
