dear experts, may I have information about the blindness caused by PML and HIV? what are the percentages of HIV+ people having PML?
Response from Dr. Conway
PML is a viral infection of the brain that is only seen in the setting of very advanced immune disease (CD4 count well below 100). Even in this population, it is not terribly common, occurring in 5% or less of these people who do not receive HAART. Although PML can present with any neurologic symptom, blindness is not at all common. If there are visual symptoms, I would be concerned about more focal diseases such as toxoplasmosis or lymphoma, or some local disorder of the eye.
