| hiv, diabetes, need to gain weight Oct 31, 2006 My husband was just diagnosed with diabetes. He has been HIV positive for 14 years. He has always been quite small and most recently has had a hard time to maintain a healthy weight. His weight is currently down to 108 and he is 5 feet, 8 inches tall. Do you have any suggestions for how to control his blood sugar and gain weight? This seems to be an unusual circumstance. |

Response from Dr. Henry
For some patients blood sugar can be hard to manage. Some patients produce very little insulin for example while others are resistant to insulin. Some HIV regimens many aggravate blood sugar control but for many of the newer regimens that seems to be less of a problem so a discussion about his current HIV regiment with his HIV specialist would be reasonable. Consultatin with a diabetic specialist and dietician is recommended. Some patients may have thyroid or testosterone disorders which may complicate matters as well. KH | ||||||||||
