|Is it possible you can get the hepatitis B even if you are already vaccinated?
Jun 20, 2006
What if the person infected with hepatitis B is not aware she had it and then she was vaccinated against it and all the while she found out she is having hepatitis B after all? How could she manage that? Can she be cured? What does she need to do? Is it true that if you are vaccinated against hepatitis B witout knowing that you already have the disease you are only activating the virus in you? Well, my friend went abroad, that's when she found out she was carrying the disease. How can she have acquired that case when she already vaccinated before being vaccinated?
Response from Dr. Conway
The vaccine is not always effective, especially in people who are also infected with HIV. In addition, it may take many months for the vaccination to lead to host immunity, so if the vaccines were only recently given, the person remains at risk of acquiring hepatitis B. Now if the person was already infected and then gets vaccinated, there is little if any risk of this causing the hepatitis B virus to progress or be reactivated. However, vaccination is not a good strategy to treat the virus and is completely ineffective at eradicating it from its tissue reservoirs.
