Lamisil and HIV
Mar 30, 2001

My good doctor, Could the powerful antifungal drug Lamisil have ANY possible effect on a viral load test, or an antibody test for HIV? I'm having a hard time finding any info. on this.

Response from Dr. Bartlett

Lamisil is an antifungal drug that is usually used to treat nail infections, or onychomycosis. It is possible for infections that complicate HIV to raise HIV RNA levels becuase of the inflammation they cause. However, I don't think that a nail infection is likely to cause enough inflammation to raise HIV RNA levels. I am not aware of Lamisil having any direct effect on HIV. Therefore, I doubt that Lamisil has a significant effect on viral load.
