Strange fat accumulation
Feb 21, 2006

My thyroid is fine and I take testosterone by way of andro gel,so I am confused as to why my fat accumulation is in my neck, upper torso under my armpits and belly. It is distributed unevenly. More like a drape on my right side around my breast. While on the left is an accumulation in belly. These are not symmetrical. I have had some success with lipsouction on my upper back for a buffalo hump. The insurance will not pay for liposuction. My lower body and buttocks are more lipoatrophied. I look odd physically. I excersise and diet but seem to only loosen fat that was once denser. YET in remains. I have lost some weight but I am 5'8 195. I have a goal of 160. POZ since '85, been on numerous cocktails and otherwise healthy non detectable. The fat accumulation has been here for years. It looks worse as I age. I am 49 and I hate my body. Are there any known excersices that target this and does it sound like something that can be reversed? I have been actively working at this over a few months. I see little results or change. Thank you.

   Response from Dr. Henry

Exercise to effectively target reduction of fat in one area of the body is not currently available to my knowledge. Growth hormone, growth hormone releasing factor, and several diabetes drugs are under investigation for reduction of HIV/treatment associated fat increases. Testosterone may help some patients. Studies have suggested it may be tough to sort out the fat increases in HIV infection +/- treatment from that seen in HIV- persons of the same age/demographics. There is a lot of attention being paid to fat physiology these days so hopefully a better understanding will lead to better treatment. KH
