Enlarged parotid glands
Jan 10, 2006

I am long term HIV+ w/ t-cells of 5 an undetec vload. My parotids have been slightly enlarged. My plastic surgeon said he can remove them, not know as it's not warranted, or I could do radiation therapy. What are the benefits of keeping my parotid glands. I know radiation can cause dry mouth. Thanks

Response from Dr. Henry

I haven't seen any comparisons of radiation versus surgery. Removing the parotid glands would more likely result in even a greater degree of dry mouth than radiaion. I have had numerous patients undergo radiation therapy with reasonable results while none of my patients have undergone surgical removal so I can't comment on that approach from my own experience.
