Scalp Problems
Jun 15, 2005

This is a followup question about my itchy flaky scalp. Before I started on my current regimen of Capex shampoo and clindamycin HCL/Fluocinolone drops I was using Ketaconozole shampoo. The Ketaconozole did not have any effect. I was with a different dermatologist when I was using the Ketaconozole shampoo. I have not taken any type of anti fungal medication internally yet. I was treated for the Folliculitis on the back of my neck with Cefalexin and one other antibiotic and now use Erythromycin pads to keep it away. What would you recommend?

Response from Dr. Henry

Your case seems very impressive and challenging. Effective treatment of HIV infection often can provide some skin/scalp benefit over time as another consideration. A trial of 2-4 weeks of an oral antifungal sometimes is worth trying on an empiric basis (such as fluconazole). KH
