| ACTOS and HIV Feb 13, 2005 I heard that ACTOS reduces insulin resistance and reduces viseral fat and triglycerides and increases subcutaneous fat and HDL. My triglycerides seem to be slightly above normal despite diet and exercise. I also have a family history of diabetes. Would ACTOS be okay for me? |

Response from Dr. Henry
The results of clinical studies of some of the diabetic drugs for HIV-related fat distribution abnormalities (like metformin or some of the glitazones) have been mixed so the jury is still out as to the general safety and effectiveness of that approach. I have had individual patients where it has seemed to work OK but I am still unclear as to the overall wisdom of that approach- awaiting more data which is frustrating. KH | ||||||||||
