|Niacin vs Statins?
Dec 29, 2004
On Sustiva/Truvada with great response, but high LDL (194) & tri (189). HDL (42). I have read some studies that because statins are processed by the same enzyme as nnrti's, they may reduce effectiveness of each other. Is niacin a better option and if so, how much?

That is true. Some patients have had good results with niacin but good prospective data is lacking. The ACTG is finishing a study looking at the effectiveness/safety of Niacin in situations like yours-results should be available fairly soon. Diet and exercise is still worth adding to the long term approach to managing cardioavascular risk as well. KH
