how long do you usually live for when you have HIV.
| Response from Dr. Conway
It really varies, as a small number of "long term non progressors" seem to be able to control their disease on their own and will live out their natural lives without ever developing AIDS. They account for <5% of all infected people, though. Another small group seem to progress to full-blown AIDS in a matter of months.
In this day and age, it is ny belief that if you have just been diagnosed with HIV infection and you have access to HAART, it is highly likely that you will bever progress to AIDS in your lifetime. This is not saying that we can cure HIV with the medications, but it is certainly possible to control it, perhaps indefinitely.
