| PMMA in Brazil Sep 3, 2004 My doctor went to a conference in and this doctor from Brazil, M.S. Serra, presented a new substance he is using for filling to treat lipodystrophy called PMMA (Poly Methyl Methacrylate). Have you ever heard about this doctor or PMMA? Do you know any website on this? Thanks, |

Response from Dr. Henry
There has been limited experience with PMMA (as you note) for the treatment of facial wasting. Long term results are unclear. NuFill (Polylactic acid) was just approved in the US for the same purpose and has probably had the best anecdotal success rate for durable benefit (cost typically $5000 for a full treatment in the US ). Collagen and other materials have also been tried. There is not injectable that is the gold standard at present (relatively inexpensive, safe, and durable effect in well studied large number of patients) though interest is high and the situation is getting somewhat better. We need a better understanding of fat metabolism and how to directly improve/prevent this condition. More studies are clearly needed. kH | |||||||||
