HIV Drugs & diabetes
Jul 29, 2004

I have had AIDS for about 10 years. I am presently on Zerit, Epivir and Reyataz. I was just diagnosed with diabetes. I'm wondering if HIV drugs can cause diabetes?

Response from Dr. Conway

There are a number of anti-HIV drugs that are associated with metabolci abnormalities, such as diabetes. The most common culprits are protease inhibitors (except for Reyataz and possibly Viracept) and also, Zerit. If someone's viral load is undetectable, we have often done a single drug switch from Zerit to another nucleoside drug so that the Zerit is no longer part of the regimen. In some cases, this reverses (or at least controls) any metabolic side effects that may have been associated with the Zerit.
