Older Patient and Course of HIV
Jun 30, 2004

Is there any research that can shed some light on whether the course of HIV to AIDS (and also overall life expectancy) is more rapid in men who are first diagnosed "later in life," i.e. in their late 50's?

Thanks for any info. "Slightly Older Gent"

Response from Dr. Henry

As a modest rule of thumb there is a trend in some studies for older HIV+ patients to progress more rapidly (modest difference). There are so many exceptions to that that I almost hesitate to even state that. On the positive side there is some data that older patients take their HIV meds better so that would lead to a better outcome. I have numerous patients doing well now planning their retirement and expecting to be healthy to enjoy it--in the future we may need geriatric HIV specialists! KH
