Life expectancy of someone with untreated full blown aids
Apr 6, 2004

If a person was diagnosed with full blown aids in 2000 and stopped meds in 2001, what's the estimated life expectancy? Currently symptoms include chills, wasting...cough... fatigue, skin rash.

Response from Dr. Henry

The range is quite variable so no prediction is appropriate. If a patient is on preventative meds of infections and has good nutrition and hormone status that can maintain health to some degree. Full blown AIDS has many definitions as well ranging from conditions with a poor prognosis without aggressive HAART (such as PML) to a CD4 count based definition (i.e. CD4 = 199). Your HIV specialist who knows the details of your case would be the best person to discuss with you. KH
