Hello Dr. Henry
How are you Dr. Henry? I hope you are well. My name is Roy, I have both hep C and hiv. Being a veteran I received antiviral therapy, (ddi, d4t, nivarpine and azt) for hiv in february 1998 at Ft. Miley for about 8 months. I became so ill that I was later given two liver biopsies that showed acute injury to the liver due to drug toxicity. I developed antiviral related hepatitis. I have since not taken any antiviral drugs. Since that time I appealed time and again to the Veterans administration for compensation for liver damage.
Although the medical records attest to it, I still need to be examined by a physician who would be able to determine as to what exent my liver is damaged. I need a doctor who could examine me and give me his opinion, a doctor who has expetise in the area of hepatoxicity on a liver already compromised by hepatitis c. I know you are busy- but if and when you can get back to me I would greatly appreiate it. Take care and thank you for your valuable time...Roy

Many HIV specialists are very used to dealing with patients with hepatitis C and compromised liver status. Very often a satisfactory HIV regimen can be put together that is tolerated by the liver. Your hepatitis C may also need further evaluation/consideration for treatment. Most HIV specialist have a user friendly GI/liver specialist they partner with. Depending on where your live I could suggest where to go for some help. Another good place to go is to contact your local HIV/AIDS community based organization about whom seems to be the preferred doc in your area. The AMerican Academy of HIV Medicine website (www.aahivm.org) has a search for provider feature to help locate certified HIV providers throughout the US/ KKH
