| Reyataz effects Feb 6, 2004 Hi! I have a couple questions about reyataz. Can reyataz cause diabetes? Also, do you recommend that someone with Hep C take Reyataz if they have not responded well to many other HIV meds.? |

Response from Dr. Henry
Reyataz generally has had minimal effect on lipid or glucose levels. The risk for an impact on insulin/glucose parameters seems quite small but not absolutely zero (and more observation time is needed since it is still a new drug). The effect of Reyataz on bilirubin levels generally has not resulted in any evidence for actual liver damage. I have used Reyataz in some patients with pre-existing liver disease without obvious problems though I am still concerned about it and monitor the patient clinically and lab test wise more carefully than usual during the first 6 months or so on drug.
