Hi! I have a couple questions about reyataz. Can reyataz cause diabetes? Also, do you recommend that someone with Hep C take Reyataz if they have not responded well to many other HIV meds.?
Response from Dr. Henry
Reyataz generally has had minimal effect on lipid or glucose levels. The risk for an impact on insulin/glucose parameters seems quite small but not absolutely zero (and more observation time is needed since it is still a new drug). The effect of Reyataz on bilirubin levels generally has not resulted in any evidence for actual liver damage. I have used Reyataz in some patients with pre-existing liver disease without obvious problems though I am still concerned about it and monitor the patient clinically and lab test wise more carefully than usual during the first 6 months or so on drug.
