| Lipoatrophy treatment using liquid silicone and the microdroplet technique Sep 30, 2003 I have an appointment to see a doctor in the next week and a half for treatment of lipoatrophy. This doctor uses silicone oil, (Adatosil or Silikon), utilizing a microdroplet technique. Do you have any info about this technique or do you know of any successes and/or failures. Please respond as soon as possible. Thank you. |

Response from Dr. Conway
Lipoatrophy is an increasingly recognized long-term complication of HIV infection and its therapy. A number of approaches have been put forward for its treatment, including the type of surgery you are considering. It will be difficult to support one approach over another once a decision is made to go for surgery. However, it many cases, the long-term results are disappointing, and can vary from one surgeon to another, even using the same technique. The best advice I can give you is to make sure you can see examples of the long-term results obtained by THIS doctor using THIS technique. Further, it might be best to see another doctor who is experienced in this field, for comparison, before you make up your mind. Good luck with this important decision. | |||||||||
