Night sweats/thrush with normal T cell levels
Jul 13, 2003

Dr. Henry, I saw the question about night sweats, with a high T cell count.

I also have occasional night sweats and plenty of other symptoms, despite a high T cell count. But other aspects of my immune system are not good - B cells and natural killer cells. Could other (non T cell) immune damage explain why some people with high T cell counts have symptoms like night sweats, thrush and other infections? It would be very interesting for the person who wrote you the question about night sweats to see if they too have low B cell and natural killer cell function and whether it might explain their and my symptoms, despite good T cell levels.

Any studies on how HIV damages non T cell elements of the immune system? How does one treat low B cell and natural killer cell function if T cell numbers are good? Also, how does one test quality of T cells function rather than just numbers?

Thank you.

Response from Dr. Henry

Our understanding of the human immune system lags behind our understanding of HIV. Your raise several good questions for which I have no easy answer. Qualitative assays of the immune systems are used much. Skin tests to tetanus, candida and other common pathogens clinical tests that has been used as a marker for immune system function. KH
