cann't find Lacto acidosis information
May 11, 2003

What is Lacto-acidosis ? I am on Kalectra,3tc and ciagen.

Response from Dr. Henry

It is chemical disorder felt to be due to mitochondrial dysfunction induced by certain HIV drugs in certain individuals. It is characterized by increased levels of lactic acid in the blood with acid-base disturbances in severe cases. Many symptoms (most often fatigue and stomach complaints) can be seen when that occurs. The regimen you are on has a low rate of lactic acidosis. Monitoring of blood chemistries and liver enzymes while on anti-HIV meds is fairly routine and helps pick up cases of lactic acidosis when they develop. KH
