New meds
Oct 5, 2002

Dear Docs

Do the new meds soon to be approved show less side effects than current drugs? Are or could there be injectable meds in the current bunch of arv's. Would this not help side effects, absorbtion rates and food restrictions? An M.D's view would be nice!

Response from Dr. Henry

The next protease inhibitor to be approved is atazanavir which is two pills once daily. It has generally been well tolerated with little effect on lipids ( an important feature). It can cause an asymptomatic increase in bilirubin which is severe in about 1% of cases.

T-20 is a fusion inhibitor which must be injected subcutantously twice a day (like insulin). It is associated with almost no side effects except injection site reactions.

There are a host of other meds in development but those will be the next two to be approved in the US. KH
