Clinical Trials for Buffalo Hump
Oct 5, 2002
My partner has a severe buffalo hump. He has been positive since 1995 of only 49tcells. Tcells now 789. He has been on all different kinds of Hiv meds. He is now only on Trizivir. The hump is getting so big that it is spreading from side to side across his back and is starting to spread down the middle of his back. He has come along ways from his death bed. He had to have a stomach wrap because of severe acid reflux desiase. could this be a problem since he doesn't absorb nutrients the same. He also has a big protruding belly.. His arms and legs have gotten real skinny. He is swollen around his liver area. But doc say's his liver is fine..Is that all fat? He also has recently found out he now has high blood pressure and high Tri's. So he is now on meds for all that to. Plus he is on depression meds celexa. We were wanting to know if you no of any clinical trials that he might sign up for for the buffalo hump or if you know of any treatment that might help. He is getting to the point that he doesn't want to leave the house. We live in San Antonio Texas. Thanks great site.
Response from Dr. Henry
There are clinical trials for increased abdominal fat using diabetic medicines (ACTG has sites in Dallas) and growth hormone can help that (trials not currently open). Exercise, diet, and lipid lowering meds +/- diabetic meds in some combination can help some but the problem is very frustrating. Some resort to plastic surgery for the time being. This problem is getting lots of attention now but progress seems slow!! Some interest in leptin as a treatment but I don't know of any trials that are now open in US in your area. KH
