what is the "latest" BASIC regimen recommendation for postexposure of healthcare workers with a hiv+ patient. Is it better to be on the 600mg azt + 3tc 150bid combination or would the azt solo 600mg a day do just as well. ......thank you.

There is no basic recommendation since it depends on the type of exposure and likelihood for transmission. In general moderate level risk exposures might be handeld with AZT + 3TC while high risk exposures generally recommend use of three drugs. The status of the source patient (known HIV+, known to harbor drug resistant virus, etc.) weighs heavily on the decision. It is generally recommended that an expert in HIV (or use of a call line such as the one San Francisco General Hospital offers)be used to guide the decision in many instances. KH
