Parotid Cysts
Jun 26, 2002

My partner has been positive for 10 years. Last year he developed a parotid cyst in his neck and had it aspirated several times, but it kept coming back. He finally had it surgically removed. Then he developed one on the other side and had surgery for it. Now he has developed several more. His doctor say it happens in some HIV patients and offers no alternatve other than aspiration and surgery. Is it known whether these cysts are a result of the virus or of the treatment? Is there anything that can be tried short of surgery to get rid of them? He can't keep having surgery as there are too many showing up. Thanks.

Response from Dr. Henry

I have had several dozen patients develop parotid enlargement due to polycystic disease (sometimes with an element of Sjogrens syndrome but usualy not). Low dose radiation seems to work best. KH
