Avascular necrosis
Mar 21, 2002

Just finished reading an article in Poz about cases of avascular necrosis seen in long-term PWA's, specifically those on HAART, those whose immune systems were reconstituted (immune recovery),and prevelence in post-menopausal women. Wondering if you have seen much of this in your practice; if you would recommend screening for this. Thank you.

Response from Dr. Henry

Yes I have a few cases in my practice. General screening is not recommended. If other risk factors exists (particularly use of corticosteroids) and there are some hip complaints then a screening X-ray is a good idea. KH
