Reducing zerit
Mar 9, 2002

Dear Dr. If you get P.N. due to zerit and want to reduce the dose can you just take 1 40mg capsule a day instead of 2 20mg. I just got a three months refill and do not think the pharmacy would change them and they are extremely expensive. Thank you.

Response from Dr. Henry

That depends on many issues including the other drugs you are on, past HIV drug use, and your clinical/CD4/RNA history. Once a day D4T in the current formulation cannot be counted upon to have the activity of twice a day dosing. Three month supplies of drugs can be a problem for reasons like this. I would plead the case with your pharmacy and doc if indeed you have developed peripheral neuropathy attributable to D4T. If you have new peripheral neuropathy likely due to D4T but can't get a dose reduction approved I would consider asking for a different drug. KH
