Fever Of Unknown Origin - JB
Feb 6, 2001

Hi Dr. Bartlett, I would really like your expert opinion. I developed a mild fever 3 months after my last protected sexual encounter. I was referred to an infectious disease specialist who did an antibody test for HIV and HEP C among other tests like CMV & EBV (10 months post exposure). After everything coming back normal he said to just ignore it because it meant nothing. My temperature ranges from 98.6 when I first wake up and reaches a max from 99.0-99.8 but no higher. By 10:00 PM I'm ALWAYS back to 98.0. This has been going on for a whole YEAR now. Does this sould like an infectious disease process. Can you explain this "phenomena" and is it something I should see an HIV specialist about. Thanks In Advance

Response from Dr. Bartlett

Thank you for such a careful description of your symptoms. Certainly fever can be a sign of infection, but it is not specific, especially when your temperature elevations are low grade. So, I don't mean to be vague, but I cannot give an absolute answer. If you and your health care provider have not been able to reach a diagnosis, I don't think it is a bad idea to see another health care provider for another review. Multiple perspectives can be very helpful when there is a diagnostic dilemma.
