| will marijuana effect abacivir or combivir? Jan 11, 2001 i'm a healthy 20 year old hiv infected male who enjoys smoking marijuana. Due to its illegal nature i have a problem asking my military tricare doctor its effect on my current medication(abacivir and combivir) is marijuana that bad for an infected person? |

Thanks for your question. In general terms, marijuana should have no significant reaction with zidovudine/lamivudine (Combivir) or abacavir. My only concern with recreational drugs is the potential for overuse, leading to possible missed doses of your HIV medications. Provided that this is not a problem; the benefits for reduction in nausea and appetite stimulation can be good. Be aware that medicinal marijuana is legal in several states (including ours, Colorado); as is a pill form of the active ingredient of marijuana (Marinol). -BY Benjamin Young, M.D., Ph.D. | |||||||||
