|will marijuana effect abacivir or combivir?
Jan 11, 2001
i'm a healthy 20 year old hiv infected male who enjoys smoking marijuana. Due to its illegal nature i have a problem asking my military tricare doctor its effect on my current medication(abacivir and combivir) is marijuana that bad for an infected person?
Response from Dr. Young
Thanks for your question. In general terms, marijuana should have no significant reaction with zidovudine/lamivudine (Combivir) or abacavir. My only concern with recreational drugs is the potential for overuse, leading to possible missed doses of your HIV medications. Provided that this is not a problem; the benefits for reduction in nausea and appetite stimulation can be good. Be aware that medicinal marijuana is legal in several states (including ours, Colorado); as is a pill form of the active ingredient of marijuana (Marinol). -BY
