Response from Dr. Henry
Consumption of grapefruit can induce certain liver enzymes and lower the levels of protease inhibitors. Generally, if ritonavir is being used to boost the levels of another drug (as it is with Kaletra) then that effect is likely minimized. Ideally one might actually measure the levels of loprinavir in the setting you described but that is easier said than done. Although I feel it is unlikely that the grapefruit would have a significant impact in the situation you described, I am not highly confident about that. Prudence would suggest that in the absence of measured levels I would tend to suggest that you limit the use of grapefruit and try to separate the pill consumption from the grapefruit with as much time as possible.
