Ziagen
Jan 20, 2002

thanks for your answer to my recent question regarding ziagen. one other thing i forgot to ask. is itching associated with the rash that one would get if they were allergic to ziagen. i have been on ziagen for about 8 days now and at times am extremely itchy. but so far have not noticed any rash. could this be the beginnings of a adverse reaction?

also if i do have hypersensitivity to ziagen what would be my alternatives as far as other medicines. i was on viramune and combivir but was taken off the combivir due to neuropathy. and the combivir and viramune were my initial treatment medicines since i first found out i was positive. so are there other meds i could take other than ziagen or would my only choice be to go back on the combivir and just deal with the neuropathy. thanks again.

Response from Dr. Henry

Itching by itself would probably not be a major clue that you have hypersensitivity to abacavir. If you had to stop abacavir then nevirapine, efavirenz, tenofovir, or a protease inhibitor might be options for you depending on the details of your past treatment. KH
