Spastic Colon
Oct 20, 2000

Is it possible for neuropathy to cause the condition known as Spastic Colon(IBS)?

If yes, would a anti-neuropathy med help?

Response from Dr. Boyle

An autonomic neuropathy can occur in HIV patients and can cause symptoms similar to IBS. It is generally accompanied by some degree of peripheral neuropathy, but in some cases the severity of the former may be much greater than that of the latter. There is no data to suggest that the treatments commonly used for peripheral neuropathy are effective in treating autonomic neuropathy. Since there are many possible causes of your IBS symptoms, I suggest you discuss this with your doctor and consider seeing a gastroenterologist regarding a evaluation. BB

Brian Boyle, M.D., J.D.
