|HIV + Couple have a HIV- baby?
Nov 24, 2010
Can an HIV+ positive couple that are both undetectable have a HIV- baby? What would be the best way to get pregnant to lower or eliminate the risk of infecting each other with our HIV strain?
Response from Dr. Henry
HIV+ couples can have healthy HIV- children in most instances when their HIV is well managed. Risk for superinfection are low if undetectable HIV levels in both members of the couple. What technologies can be used depends on local standards of care, insurance, financial resources. For the typical situation in our clinic (patient is impoverished), we often would recommend the "turkey baster" methods using a syringe to place ejaculated semen into the cervix during ovulation period (which is being monitored).
