Drug screening and Atripla
Jun 21, 2009

I am currently on Atripla and need to have a drug screening for my job. I have heard that I could test positive for marajuana. What should I do. Tell them at the time of the screening that I am on Atripla - will they take account of that? Is it an option to come off the treatment for 5 days. What will the impact on my health be and will it give me a better chance of passing - or will being off the treatment for this time not affect the drug test result. Your urgent response will be appreciated. Many thanks

   Response from Dr. Henry

Use of efavirenz (in Atripla) can causes false positive urine tests for marijuana and benzodizepines (like diazepam). I often write patients a note stating that they are being prescribed a drug that can cause such false positive reactions (without necessarily mentioning the drug or underlying condition) to have handy if a problem arises. I have had hundreds of patients on efavirenz-based regimens and never have had a patient fired from work for a positive drug test. KH
