can HIV ever really be cured ???

Hi Dr Henry,
do you think hiv can ever be cured in your opinion ??? or for second best do you think the current meds will improve in the next 5 years to be more durable with less side effects ???

There is no treatment currently under study at the moment that seems likely to result in a cure (so more basic science studies need to be done to develop new approaches and it's unpredictable if any future breakthroughs will occur). Current treatment options in western countries is generally outstanding with many once-a-day regimens that are well tolerated with high success rates available. Persons taking modern regimens who achieve undetectable status and a good CD4 count (< 350-500) have an excellent track record for maintaining good health for a long time (measured in decades with the possibility of a normal life expectancy).
