Lipodystrophy/Drug Combo
Jul 2, 2008

Positive since 2001; doing fine health wise; started drug therapy about 3 yrs ago and stick to it religiously; Norvir, Truvada and Reyataz; picked those mostly for lack of lipodystrophy issues and couldn't take Sustiva mind play; Questions: Think I may have a very small growth that feels weird and slightly prominent around my axis/atlas of neck. May this be the start of 'buffalo hump?' I thought I picked the 'right' drug choices?

Response from Dr. Henry

The rate of drug related lipodystrophy from your regimen is very low but not zero over the first several years of use (< 10% in my experience). It would not be easy to pick any alternative regimen that would clearly have less of a risk from what we know now. I would look at your similarly aged or older relatives to see what genetic factors may be active regarding fat distribution. I would also have your HIV specialist examine the area in question for his/her opinion. KH
